ARTWORK
TIPS.
- ARTWORK
MASTERS: Must be presented on CDR, If presenting multiple jobs please
provide separate CDR's for each job as this is how they must be presented
to the factory. We do not accept film, all art is sent digitally to plates.
- ARTWORK
FILES: Unless
using Pantones (see below), all artwork files must be supplied with all images
and fonts embeded or flattened as single layer images and saved as 300dpi
CMYK (NO RGB!)(or grayscale for black and white jobs) PDF files. Basically
combine all font / picture and design elements into one image. To do this
in illustrator simply > select all > create outlines > save as PDF,
in photoshop > file > flatten image > save as PDF. Other programs
have a poke around I'm sure you'll work it out. This will not only decrease
your file size but will stop any possible image or font dropouts or un expected
changes when being opened on a different computer or program.
- LAYERS:
Please keep the template layers and your artwork layers separate, measurement
layers should not be flattened onto the final file as these measurements
should not appear on the final printed job.
- FONTS:
Must be converted to outlines or rasterised with a recommended line thinkness
of 0.6pt or above and placed within a recommedned clearzone of 3mm from
any trim or fold line.
- DISCART:
Please remember when designing your discart designs that you are in fact
printing onto a silver surface not white therefore unless you specify a
white base all areas on your design that are white will appear as disc silver
when printed.
- DIGITAL
PROOFING: All artwork must be accompanied by high quality digital
proofing. That means to scale, full colour, hardcopy representations of
all artwork. This is essential and allows our printers to colour match to
your desired result. A digital proof is defined by a printout from a high
end printer that uses vector and pixel based imaging when outputting (preferably
from a stand alone RIP). Your proofs must include bleed, registration and
trim marks. All jobs presented that don't adhere to the above (i.e laser
prints) cannot be guaranteed for colour matching purposes. Such laser prints
must be accompanied with an indemnity letter stating you are aware that
your proofing is not sufficient for strict colourmatching and your aware
variances in colour may occur. If you do not supply proofing we can provide
proofs for an additional $10 per A4 page but will not guarantee any aspect
of the print job as we can't second guess your intentions. Also worth noting
that scanned images and flat computer generated colours can all look spiffy
together on your screen but when printed you may notice a variation between
the two, this is especially evident with blacks where the scan was 90% black
and the colour fill 100%, this can hardly noticeable on screen but when
printed you will have ugly grey boxes. Basically colours from a screen are
a projected light source while a printed proof will be a reflected light
source. Another golden reason to proof before sending us the art.
- BLEED,
REGISTRATION MARKS & TRIM MARKS: please add
3mm of bleed to all paper parts (do not put bleed on discart). Bleed is
a continuation of an image that will be trimmed from the final product,
it is used because sometimes when no trim is added an ugly white line may
appear at your edge due to a slightly misaligned cutting machine. Also please
leave all registration and trim marks, the small circles and cross hairs
(found on the downloadable templates below). These are needed for correct
registration and are critical to the automatic register system and print
machine performance and must appear on every plate separation.
- FILENAMES:
Please name your files so they can be easily identified, for instance when
designing a 4 panel booklet present them as printers pairs and name them
accordingly ie. MYJOBNAME PAGES 4 AND 1, MYJOBNAME PAGES 2 AND 3, MYJOBNAME
PAGES OUTER INLAY & MYJOBNAME PAGES INNER INLAY etc all.
- SPOT
COLOURS: If your design uses flat colours you may achieve a better
result by supplying your art as SPOT PANTONE
PMS colours. Unless your familiar with these we recommend that you simply
supply as cmyk but if you know what your doing and can separate your colours
into layers or channels with clearly specified PMS pantone codes for each
please do so and don't forget to stipulate this on your purchase order,
including all codes and the order in which you would like them printed.
Metallic and fluro colours must be supplied in this way and will attract
a surcharge quoted on a job by job basis for press setup time.
- ORIENTATION:
Please consider the orientation of your art, especially when producing art
for the dualplover cardboard sleeves or digipaks. Printout a mock and fold
it checking that all images face the way you intend.
- INSTRUCTIONS:
When outlining your intent art wise please resort to paper (we need a purchase
order) we will not read text files hidden within the art master
CDR. These instructions should let us know anything you think is relevant
to the job. The simplest example being that you want the disc art printed
on a white base to the more complex that you want black to be printed first
so revered text can be read on the underside of the disc. All this should
be included on your purchase order you can download
a pdf version of it here.
